HOW TO IDENTIFY A TRUE FRIEND

In every season of life, one thing remains true—we were never meant to walk this journey alone. After you’ve been betrayed by a friend, or by someone you believe was a friend, your heart shifts into protective mode. You become careful with how much of yourself you share, how much of your time you give, and trust is reluctantly granted like grains of sand.

From moments of happiness to seasons of uncertainty, God often sends people into our lives to walk beside us. These are not just acquaintances or casual connections. God does send trusted friends. The ones who cover you, correct you, pray for you, and stand with you when life feels heavy.

What Is a True Friend?

I believe a true friend is not simply someone who knows your name or shares your interests. A true friend is someone who:

Speaks truth, even when it’s uncomfortable for us to hear
Protects your vulnerability, rather than exploiting it
Celebrates your growth, instead of competing with it
Prays for you, not just talks about you
Remains consistent, even when life changes
True friendships are rooted in honesty, accountability, and love; the same love that God shows us. Can you identify this type of friend in your life right now?

Biblical Foundation of Friendship

Scripture reminds us of the value of true friendship:

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” – Proverbs 17:17
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17
These verses reveal something powerful:
True friends are not just companions—they are instruments of growth.

They challenge us to be better! They remind us of who we are in Christ when we become distracted by the world’s view of us. They help refine our character.

Why We Need True (trusted) Friends

In a world full of noise, opinions, and distractions, trusted friends help you stay grounded. We have a lot on our plates as wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, and step-roles. The right kind of friend will remind you of God’s Word when your emotions try to get the best of you.

Growth requires accountability. Trusted friends don’t allow you to remain in cycles that hinder your purpose; they lovingly call you higher and push you to be better and do better.

There are moments when you don’t have the strength or words to pray. A true and trusted friend will stand in the gap for you! That’s critical.

Whether you’re celebrating a victory or navigating a valley, trusted friends don’t disappear when things get hard.

Jesus Modeled Trusted Friendship

Even Jesus Christ, in His earthly ministry, chose close relationships. Among the twelve disciples, He had an even smaller circle: Peter, James, and John.

This shows us something important. Not everyone should have access to your inner circle, and that’s okay, Sis! These kinds of friendships are intentional, not accidental. Choose carefully who you let into your private and personal life.

How to Cultivate Trusted Friendships

Pray for discernment – Ask God to reveal who is assigned to your life in this season.
Be trustworthy yourself – Integrity attracts integrity
Set healthy boundaries – Not everyone is meant to carry your vulnerabilities
Invest intentionally – Trusted friendships require time, presence, and care                                                                                                                                       . A Word of Wisdom – Be mindful – everyone who is friendly is not a friend

Trusted friendships are built over time, through consistency, character, and shared faith.

Take a moment and ask yourself:

Who in my life can I trust with my truth?
Who challenges me to grow spiritually?
Am I being a trusted friend to others?
God often answers our prayers for strength, wisdom, and comfort through people.

Trusted friends are a gift, appreciate them, respect them, and grow with them. And if you find yourself in a season where you don’t yet have those relationships, be encouraged…

God is still writing your story, and He knows exactly who to send!
