A Mother’s Love by: Sakinah Freeman

When I think of a mother’s love, words like unconditional, selfless, and nurturing come to mind. A mother’s love is one of God’s greatest gifts, a reflection of His compassion, grace, and endless care for His children. It is love that comforts in times of sorrow, celebrates in moments of joy, and remains steadfast through every season of life.

Scripture uses the picture of a mother to describe how God Himself loves us. In Isaiah 66:13, the Lord says, “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” When we witness a mother’s tenderness, we are seeing a small glimpse of the heart of God. Many people assume that a mother’s love can only come from a biological mother. While biological mothers hold a special place in our hearts, the truth is that motherly love extends far beyond bloodlines. God often places nurturing women in our lives who help shape, guide, and encourage us when we need it most.

We see this beautifully in the story of Ruth and Naomi. Though they were bound by marriage rather than birth, Ruth refused to leave her mother-in-law, pledging, “Where you go I will go” (Ruth 1:16). Their devotion reminds us that love chosen and offered freely can be every bit as deep as the love we are born into.

A mother’s love can come from a grandmother whose wisdom provides direction and comfort. It can come from a schoolteacher who believes in a struggling student and inspires them to reach their full potential. It can come from an aunt, a mentor, a foster mother, a neighbor, or a church leader who offers support, encouragement, and a listening ear.

The apostle Paul saw this very kind of inherited faith in young Timothy. In 2 Timothy 1:5, he recalls the sincere faith that lived first in Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, a faith passed down through generations of faithful women. Their legacy shows us that the spiritual nurturing of a grandmother or mentor can shape a life just as powerfully as anything else, leaving a mark that lasts for generations.

Many women who may not have given birth to us give of themselves generously. They share their time, wisdom, prayers, and strength when life becomes difficult. Their love shows that motherhood is not defined by biology alone; it is defined by the heart. In Titus 2:3-5, older women are called to teach and encourage younger ones, a holy calling to pour into others with patience and love. This is the spirit behind Galatians 6:2, where we are invited to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” A mother’s heart does exactly this: it carries what others cannot carry alone.

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of God’s nurturing love reflected through faithful women who cared for others with compassion and sacrifice. Their lives remind us that love is an action, a commitment, and a calling. A motherly heart seeks to serve, uplift, and protect those entrusted to its care. Consider the woman of Proverbs 31, whose children rise up and call her blessed, who “opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31:26, 28).

To every woman who has guided, encouraged, and loved others with a mother’s heart, thank you! Your patience, prayers, wisdom, and kindness have brought light into the lives of many. Whether you are a mother by birth, by choice, a cherished church mother, or someone who has cared deeply, your love continues to grow through the lives you have touched and will always be remembered with gratitude.

Her Journey humbly writes this blog in honor of each you!

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the gift of nurturing love, and for every woman who has reflected Your tenderness to those around her. Thank You for mothers by birth and by choice, for grandmothers, mentors, church mothers, and faithful friends who have guided, prayed, and given so freely of themselves.

Bless them, Lord, as they have blessed others – In Jesus’ name, Amen.
