When It Feels Hard To Be Thankful

Walking Through the Season With a Weary Heart

The holiday season is often portrayed as joyful, warm, and full of celebration—but for many women, it brings a very different reality. Grief feels sharper. Loneliness feels deeper. Anxiety, sadness, and emotional exhaustion rise to the surface. When your heart is hurting, the lights, family gatherings, and expectations can make everything feel even heavier.

And although there’s no shortage of advice, tips, or “holiday hacks,” what many of us truly need is compassion, connection, and a reminder that we’re not alone. Even during this time, there is much to be thankful for.

When Pulling Away Feels Easier—but Hurts More

Sis, if you have even one genuine friend in your life, you are blessed. The holiday season is a time to lean into that blessing. Yet when we’re overwhelmed, the natural instinct is to pull back. We decline invitations, ignore messages, and convince ourselves no one understands. But isolation is a quiet, subtle thief. It steals joy, peace, and energy.

Sometimes, without realizing it, we shut out the very people God sent to support us.

Ask yourself gently:

Am I allowing others to love me?
Am I making it difficult for people to approach me because of my reactions, fear, or exhaustion?
Am I pushing people away but still hoping someone will break through the walls?
This is a season to let your circle be your circle—your sisters, your safe place, your strength when you’re tired.

Let me introduce you to a woman in the bible named Hannah. In the Old Testament, the first book of Samuel (1 Samuel 1), we meet Hannah—a woman whose story speaks to the hearts of so many of us.

Hannah was devastated that she couldn’t have a child. Her pain ran so deep that she would not eat. Her desire for a child consumed her thoughts, and year after year, she faced this disappointment. On top of that, she was taunted by Peninnah, the other wife of her husband, who enjoyed rubbing Hannah’s pain in her face. Many of us know what it feels like to hurt silently, while others judge or and seem to rejoice in our pain and remind us of what’s wrong or what we lack in our lives. But Hannah kept praying. She kept pressing. And at the right time—God’s time—her breakthrough came. She gave birth to Samuel, one of the greatest prophets in the Bible.

But here’s the part that I love:

Hannah never stopped praying. She never stopped believing and she never stopped showing up before God.

Hannah’s story reminds us:

1.      Remember who you are, but more importantly, remember whose you are.

2.      No matter what others think, say, or assume, God’s plan for you is intact.

3.      God’s timing may not match your expectations, but it will always match your purpose.

No one’s opinion, judgment, or gossip can cancel your calling or God’s purpose for your life. God’s timeline is still unfolding.

Speak Life to Yourself, my sisters

As women, we’re often the encouragers, the strong ones, the nurturers. But this season, be that woman for yourself.

Speak words of love, not criticism.
Speak peace, not fear.
Speak hope, not defeat.

How things look today is not how they will stay. This moment is temporary. And better days—yes, much better days—are already in motion.

This Season, Let Love In

Use this time to:

Show kindness to another woman on her journey
Accept help and encouragement when others offer it
Quiet the voice in your mind that tears you down
Remind yourself daily: you are worthy, beautiful, and deeply loved
Let this season be one where you stop fighting alone and allow God and His people to carry you when you’re weary.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
—Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

God sees your struggle, understands your sorrow, and invites you into His rest. Your breakthrough is on the way! God hasn’t forgotten you. He hasn’t overlooked you, and your journey isn’t finished. On the days when your tears speak louder than your voice—God sees you, and He has you on his heart.

Hold on! You’re stepping into a new season, even if you can’t see it yet.
