When Christmas Feels Heavy: Finding Christ in the Midst of the Season

Christmas is celebrated for many reasons. For some, it is a sacred time to honor the birth of Jesus Christ. For others, it is a joyful season filled with lights, gatherings, and gift-giving. Children eagerly await Christmas morning, believing it brings wonder and delight, while beneath it all remains the greatest gift of all—the arrival of our Savior.

At its heart, Christmas was never meant to weigh us down, but to lift us up. It is a season rooted in hope, light, and love—a reminder that God stepped into our broken world to bring peace and restoration. When we return our focus to Christ, Christmas becomes more than a date on the calendar; it becomes an invitation to experience joy that lasts far beyond one day.

Rather than worrying about traditions or appearances, we can choose to participate with faith and gratitude, boldly acknowledging the birth that changed everything. Christmas is not just something we observe—it is a promise we live, share, and carry forward. “Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” Luke 9:26 (NIV)

When we strive so hard to conform to the world, are we quietly sacrificing our acknowledgment of the God we serve? Are we suppressing our beliefs—or have we grown unsure of the power and divinity of Christ? Whatever the reason, Scripture reminds us that while we live in this world, we are not meant to blend in with it.

Romans 12:2 (NIV) tells us:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Does this mean no Christmas trees or decorations? That conversation can wait, but what can’t wait is acknowledging a brutal reality: despite the lights, gifts, and celebrations, Christmas is a season filled with grief, loneliness, anxiety, and depression for many women and children.

The pressure to spend money, create joy, meet expectations, and joyfully hold everything together, all while hiding personal pain, can be overwhelming. This emotional strain is sometimes called the Christmas blues, and it affects more women and mothers than we realize.

As mothers, we want our children to experience the bliss of the season. We want to be grateful, cheerful, and strong. But when our smile feels forced, and the weight in our chest won’t lift, the pressure builds – like a knot in your stomach or a lump in your throat.

Let me tell you, my sister – there is nothing wrong with you!
What you’re feeling is real, valid, and shared by many others

Life’s challenges don’t disappear overnight—especially during the holidays. Healing and peace come one step at a time. Small steps still matter. Here are five gentle, faith-filled steps you can begin today that can have an immediate impact.

1. Engage in Self-Care Through Scripture

True self-care begins with your spirit. Set aside quiet time to read the Word, even if it’s only a few minutes a day. If you don’t know where to start, consider the book of Ruth (a story of loss, faith, and redemption), the Psalms (honest prayers from the heart), or the Gospel of Luke, which reminds us why this season exists.

2. Set Healthy Boundaries

Release the idea of the “perfect Christmas.” Talk openly with your children, family, and close friends. Choose meaningful moments over exhausting traditions. Unity and presence matter more than perfection.

3. Pray Honestly and Often

Prayer doesn’t have to be eloquent. God welcomes your honesty. – It’s okay to cry or express your frustration. He understands!  Ask Him for peace, strength, and clarity.

4. Cut Back on Social Media

Social media and expectations can quickly steal your joy. Every family’s Christmas season looks different. Give yourself permission to do less and be present more. Comparison is a thief—peace grows where contentment lives.

5. Seek Connection and Support

You were never meant to carry the cares of this life alone. Reach out to a trusted friend, a church group, a faith-based community, or email us at Her Journey. Sharing your burden doesn’t make you weak—it builds your strength!

Christmas is a reminder that God stepped into our broken world through Jesus Christ—to bring hope, healing, and eternal love. If this season feels heavy, know that Christ is near to the weary and close to the brokenhearted.

This is Her Journey—and you are not walking it alone.
